For the first time, all Union County Public School calendars will feature "banked days" (BD) or early release days during the 2011-2012 school year.
UCPS has scheduled five BDs during which students will attend school only a half day. These will affect all UCPS calendars.
The state of North Carolina requires school to be in session 180 days and 1,000 hours. Currently, UCPS meets the 180 days and exceeds the 1,000-hour requirement, creating enough extra time to allow for these half days.
The state is adopting a new curriculum starting next year to align with the Federal Common Core Standards. This new curriculum will require extensive staff development for UCPS teachers. The afternoons of these half days will be used for this purpose.
These days will actually help UCPS with its budget, as it will save the school system the expense of teachers working during the summer months, which would require extra pay.
