  • Buck Jones, a senior at Weddington High School, has been named the Charlotte Touchdown Club’s Donnie Shell High School Defensive Player of the Year.

  • The Union County Public Schools Communications Office won nine Blue Ribbon awards, recognizing outstanding school public relations publications across the state, during the North Carolina School Public Relations Association’s annual Blue Ribbon Awards Ceremony for Effective Communications.

  • Marvin Ridge Middle School's Battle of the Books (BoB) Team won the regional BoB Competition beating out nine other schools in neighboring counties within Region 6 of North Carolina. The MRMS team won the Union County Competition for the fourth time in a row prior to winning the regional competition.

Civil War re-enactors offer ‘real look’ at history

Bob Etzler, a local Civil War re-enactor, is known for his “rebel yell.” He demonstrated that talent for Porter Ridge High School students during a recent Civil War Day at the school. Porter Ridge High School history teacher Dan Korn’s students are treated to a Civil War Day twice a year, a look back at life during the War Between the States. The activities coincide with Korn's class titled Civil War History, an honors course at his school.

Weddington Elementary student to present football at Super Bowl

First Lady Michelle Obama shows NFL PLAY 60 Super Kid James Gale, 11, a fifth grader at Weddington Elementary, historical photos from previous administrations which are on display in the Booksellers Area of the White House. The tour took place during a National Football League (NFL) taping in the East Wing of the White House, Jan. 30, 2012. Because James was chosen as the "Super Kid," he will present the official football to the referee on the 50-yard line before kickoff at Sunday’s big game.
