• What is Career & Technical Education, the Career Readiness Department, or CTE?

Experience CTE Career and Technical Education (also referred to in UCPS as the Career Readiness Department of CTE) is an evolution of “Vocational Education” that started with the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 and has been updated many times over the past 100 years. The last update, Perkins V, also known as “The Strengthening Career & Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, was signed into law on July 31, 2018 and amended the Carl D. Perkins Career & Technical Education Act of 2006 (Perkins IV). Perkins V will go into effect on July 1, 2019.  CTE strives to provide education that is focused on teaching technical and high level problem solving skills through real-world applications that are designed to meet the needs of learners, educators, and employers. The goal of CTE is to create a pipeline of skilled workers for all industries, especially those in and around the school system. Students in UCPS have many opportunities in a number of pathways that will help prepare them for life after high school; whether it be at a four-year university, a two-year community or technical college, straight into a career, or some combination. In many courses students also have an opportunity to receive industry recognized certifications. Throughout the school year, CTE Sponsored events are held for students to showcase their talents in such areas as Robotics and other STEM Events, a Culinary Competition, a Film Festival, and more.
