Welcome Letter From Board of Education
Welcome to Union County Public Schools, one of the best school systems in North Carolina. That is quite a boast, but we believe that it is merited. As a Board, we are proud of the accomplishments of our students and staff. We also take great pride in the partnerships we have established with parents, businesses and the community.
Serving 41,500 students, UCPS is home to 20 honor schools of excellence (39 percent of UCPS schools). To give perspective to this number, statewide there are only 278 schools or 11.2 percent of the state’s 2,482 public schools and public charter schools to rate this designation. There are also 17 UCPS schools of distinction (33.3 percent of UCPS schools). Statewide, 28 percent (717 schools) rated this status. Ten UCPS schools received A+ distinction from the Department of Public Instruction.
UCPS has the highest 2016-2017 graduation rate in the state among large school systems with a four-year cohort rate of 92.5%.
The Class of 2018 earned scholarships totaling $135 million, the highest amount of scholarship offers to date for UCPS graduates.
Union County Public Schools leads the state in dual language immersion programs, offering its Dual Language Immersion programs at 11 schools in the district during the 2017-18 school year.
In addition, three schools, Central Academy of Technology and Arts, Shiloh Elementary and Weddington Middle were named Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.
There are many challenges that face our school system today. While recent local, state and federal funding cuts have taken a major toll on the educational system, we are still committed to offering quality instruction for all children to support our mission of “Preparing All Students to Succeed.”
