Battle of the Books
The purpose of the Battle of the Books is to encourage continued reading for the enjoyment by all students at the high school level. The game-style competition format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base.
A committee from the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA) creates an annual list of 15 books based on NCSLMA member recommendations. The books are selected based upon their literary merits, and the committee is careful to choose books that vary in length, difficulty and subject matter.
Meetings: During club meetings, students will discuss the books and practice answering trivia questions about them. The book list for the program contains 15 books. Team members are asked to read all of the books on the list in order to prepare for the competitions. Beginning in November, there will be monthly meetings/practice sessions after school in the media center.
