** NEW** MARVIN RIDGE PTSO SCHOLARSHIP
The MRHS Scholarship Committee shall award four scholarships in the amount of $1000 each academic year, provided that the needed funds have been raised by the general membership. If the needed funds have not been raised, the PTSO board will inform the Scholarship Committee of any necessary revisions to the number and/or dollar amount of scholarships. The scholarships will be announced at the Awards Day at MRHS. The recipient must provide evidence that the student will attend a post-secondary educational institution (including trade or technical schools) on a full-time basis after graduation. A parent or guardian of each recipient shall be required to guarantee the return of any MRHS scholarship money if the recipient does not attend school during the academic year that starts in the fall of the current calendar year. Applicant must be a senior at MRHS graduating June 2020. Student or student’s parents must be a current member of MRHS PTSO. Any parent wishing to join may do so on the MRHS PTSO website. If membership needs to be verified, please send a “contact” message from MRHSPTSO.com. We know as Senior you have prepared many essays applying to colleges. The BILL COOK “ALWAYS A MAVERICK” SCHOLARSHIP
The Bill Cook “Always a Maverick” Scholarship is for a graduating senior that embodies the characteristics of Mr. Bill Cook, opening principal at MRHS. The senior that is awarded this $1,000 scholarship must be in good standing and have demonstrated the following characteristics throughout their four years at MRHS: Maverick at Heart, Achiever, Vibrant, Efficient, Resourceful, Involved, Charismatic, and Knowledgeable. Please write a one page essay detailing the reasons you believe that you will be “Always a Maverick”. Essays should be limited to 500 words or less. The winner of the scholarship will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony. Apply Here by May 8, 2020.
ANDREW CRUZ MEMORIAL INNOVATION IN TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
Each year, the Andrew Cruz Innovation Fund awards a $1,500 scholarship to a deserving Marvin Ridge High School senior. The goal of this scholarship is to recognize a graduating student who demonstrates academic achievement, specifically in innovation and a dedication to using technology in ways that enrich the community. This scholarship is a one-time grant, paid directly to the student’s post-secondary school, to honor the values and passion Andrew Cruz and this student exemplify. Eligibility: Applicant must be a senior at MRHS graduating in June 2019, have an unweighted GPA of 3.0, must have demonstrated proficiency in technological-related areas and clubs (inside or outside of MRHS). The applicant must also be accepted to a post-secondary educational institution (two-year college, four-year college/university, technical/vocational school, etc.) Essay and two letters of recommendation are required. MARVIN RIDGE MAVERICKS ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB SCHOLARSHIP & The JEFF ATEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The mission of the MRMABC Scholarship Program is to financially assist outstanding student athletes who pursue post-secondary education. Three scholarships are awarded annually: one $2,000 Jeff Aten Memorial Scholarship and four $1,000 general MRMABC scholarships. The MRMABC general scholarships are awarded to two male student-athletes and two female student-athletes. The goal of the Jeff Aten Memorial Scholarship is to recognize a graduating student who demonstrates academic achievement, dedication to their athletics, including positive sportsmanship, strong character and involvement in their community. This scholarship is a one-time grant, paid directly to the student’s post-secondary school, to honor the values Coach Aten and this student exemplify. General MRMABC Scholarships are intended to encourage and recognize outstanding athletes at MRHS, based on their academic success, dedication, leadership, sportsmanship, and conduct. MONROE-UNION BREAKFAST ROTARY CLUB is accepting applications from high school seniors. Scholarships will be awarded based on the applicant’s credentials in the area of service to people, community, and the environment. Applicants will be required to write an essay of 250-300 words. THE MARY & MILLARD KIKER SCHOLARSHIP is for seniors who are residents of Union or Anson County and demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Minimum 2.5 GPA and submit 1 paragraph describing goals, motivation, and potential major. MRHS will nominate 2 students by February 21, 2020.
SECU FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP - PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE
The SECU Foundation People Helping People Scholarship is available to graduating public high school seniors who are either current members of the State Employees’ Credit Union or the child of a parent/guardian who is a member of the SECU at the time of the application. Preference will be given to those majoring in public service degree programs. Applicants must demonstrate scholastic achievement with a maintained 2.5 or higher unweighted GPA and may be deserving of financial aid. This is a four year $10,000 scholarship payable at $1,250 a semester for 8 consecutive semesters. Each school will convene a scholarship committee to determine the school’s top 2 nominees. This year, the district scholarship committee will determine the winner from each school and each school’s alternate. Requirements: Completed Student Application and Essay, Copy of University Acceptance Letter, Photo of Student, a 5-6 sentence bio written by the student to include accomplishments and awards, and a signed consent form with signatures. UNION COUNTY EDUCATION FOUNDATION
DEADLINE: February 24, 2020. LINK TO APPLY Applicants will create a two-minute surprise video tribute to a significant UCPS teacher for an opportunity to receive $1,250 initially and more funds at The Sweet Salute on May 14. The teacher tribute video can be honoring a current, former, or retired employee, who teaches at the elementary, middle, or high school level. Picture with us, teachers from all corners of the county being encouraged by seeing these uplifting videos! NOTE: Your teacher can know that you are recognizing him or her, but should not even have a hint about the theme of your video or see any part of it! Any UCPS senior can: 1) Select a teacher who has had a profound influence on you, 2) Brainstorm a creative way to pay tribute to the teacher in video format. Videos that are creative, funny, or meaningful get the attention of the judges. 3) Make sure it is under two minutes. Also required: a resume, letter of recommendation, and transcript. KIWANIS CLUB OF MONROE SCHOLARSHIP is for seniors who are residents of Union County. Applicants must submit a high school transcript, three letters of recommendation, and an essay along with the application. Click here for the application. DEADLINE: February 24, 2020.
NCAE: THE DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING SCHOLARSHIP
This Scholarship was established in 1992 by the North Carolina Association of Educators Minority Affairs Commission under the auspices of the Human and Civil Rights Commission. It continues in partnership with the North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children. Scholarship awards are based on the amount of money received annually through donations and the Martin Luther King Jr events.Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship. APPLY HERE Each year the non-profit Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee, Inc. awards a $2,000 scholarship to one or more high school seniors to support their goals of higher education. WEDDINGTON OPTIMIST COMPUTER SCHOLARSHIP
The Weddington Optimist Computer Scholarship awards a Dell Latitude 15 3000 Series Laptop with Microsoft Office Student edition. One scholarship awarded per high school. Seniors do not have to be enrolled in a 2 or 4-year higher education institution in the fall of 2020. The Weddington Optimists are looking for individuals who will be enthusiastic and optimistic that the scholarship will help you meet your life goals as you embark on new life experiences. Answer the following question on page 2 by writing a 2-page essay. Essay should be double spaced, 1-inch margins and font size no larger than 12. Bold words are allowed. Please include your full name, date, high school, and guidance counselor’s name in the essay’s header. Essay Question: Why do you deserve the Computer Scholarship? Include any volunteer work you have participated in the past few years. How has your volunteer work developed or expanded your optimistic views and experiences? Incorporate a phrase or two from Optimist Creed in your answer. THE NEW CENTURY SCHOLARS PROGRAM is NEW and REVISED this year! New Century Scholarships are available for students who plan to attend South Piedmont Community College (SPCC) and work toward an Associate’s Degree, Diploma, or Non-Credit (Continuing Education) program. Scholarship recipients will receive up to four semesters of tuition at the in-state rate for Associates Degree programs to be completed within three years, starting from the fall semester immediately following the student's high school graduation. Complete and submit the online scholarship application, Complete and submit an application to SPCC, Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, Decide on a Program (SPCC Degree Program, an SPCC Diploma Program, or an SPCC Certificate Program, Submit two letters of recommendation from your high school, and submit a final transcript. DELTA SIGMA THETA / THE ROSA L. POSTON & JEANNETTE B. SHERROD SCHOLARSHIPS
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Union County Alumnae Chapter will award scholarships to African-American graduating senior women who have the desire to pursue post-secondary education in an accredited four-year institution to commemorate the achievements of two members of Delta Sigma Theta. 2020 MICHAEL A. DEMAYO SCHOLARSHIP
The Michael A. DeMayo law firm will award 15 $2,500 Scholarships to students from the communities that their offices serve. The committee will select students based on their grades(3.0 minimum), school and community involvement, SAT scores, an essay, Powerpoint Presentation, or brochure that encourages fellow teens to abstain from underage drinking and highlight the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving. UNION POWER COOPERATIVE SCHOLARSHIP
Union Power Cooperative is awarding 10 - $1000 college scholarships to seniors. Awards are based on the following criteria: All applicants must be a child of a Union Power Cooperative member or live in a home served by Union Power Cooperative. The applicant must be a high school senior in the current graduating class. Criteria for awarding the scholarship to an individual is based on 40% need; 30% scholastic achievement; and 30% extracurricular activities in school, civic, and community functions. Children of Union Power employees and its subsidiary, Union Services, are not eligible to apply. ISABELLA SANTOS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
Amount $1,000. This scholarship is for a MRHS senior who participated in making a positive difference in our community related to cancer awareness, cancer action, or support of any cancer related charity or foundation. Eligibility requirements also include having a minimum 3.0 weighted GPA and entering college in fall 2019 is eligible to apply. This scholarship is specific to Marvin Ridge! WAXHAW WOMEN’S CLUB
The Waxhaw Woman's Club scholarship is a $2500 - $5000 scholarship given to a female in the senior class of a Union County, NC public high school. GIRLS ON THE RUN OF UNION COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP
$1000 Scholarship to be awarded to any girl who participated in Girls on the Run (grades 3-5) or Girls on Track/Heart and Sole (grades 6-8) in Union County and will enter college in the Fall of 2020. Requirements: minimum GPA of 3.0 (weighted); Exhibit the ideals from the Girls on the Run Vision and Values of being joyful, optimistic, grateful, and nurturing of one’s health; Essay; 2 letters of character reference (one from a teacher and one from another person of one’s choosing such as a coach, advisor, or employer). INSTRUCTIONS: Respond to questions below by attaching a separate document not to exceed two typed single-spaced pages. *Your name and high school should be clearly indicated at the top of your document. *Please attach a current copy of your transcript and your two letters of reference. 1. BLUMENTHAL PERFORMING ARTS: GORDON HAY SCHOLARSHIP Each year the Gordon Hay Scholarship Committee selects a high school senior to receive a unique $5000 scholarship. The Gordon Hay Scholarship benefits a student within the Charlotte region who demonstrates technical or artistic accomplishment in a non-performance area of the performing arts. The award is designed for special learning opportunities related to the recipient’s career interest in a non-performing area of the performing arts. Opportunities include but are not limited to professional conferences, seminars, workshops, participation in unpaid internship programs, technological equipment, books, supplies, and professional performances. Scholarship Committee will consider the following when selecting scholarship finalists: career potential in a non-performance area of the performing arts as evidenced by a portfolio presentation and appropriate references, academic performance, evidence of the pursuit of personal excellence, school and community engagement, desire to enrich the lives of others through the performing arts, financial need. Lockheed Martin STEM Scholarship-Scholarship America
Calling all STEM Scholars! Lockheed Martin has launched a new scholarship program to provide opportunities to students who want to build their talents and change the world! We are awarding 200 scholarships of $10,000 per student – renewable each year. The program will continue to add up to 200 new recipients each year, and will be open to individuals studying engineering or computer science that demonstrate financial need and come from underrepresented or underserved communities. The scholarship program doesn’t end with a check. Mentoring opportunities will be a key component of the program, and recipients will also be eligible for Lockheed Martin internship opportunities following their freshman year in college. Foot Locker is offering $20,000 scholarships for student-athletes on Going Merry. (Deadline January 3!) This is one of the top 5 scholarship programs in the country, with twenty students winning $20,000 each to go towards tuition at any accredited four-year college. Successful applicants must demonstrate exceptional academic ability and strong leadership skills in sports, school, and their communities. Light On the Hill Society Scholarship
A tribute to Carolina’s African-American graduates of the 1950s and 1960s by providing scholarships to current first-year African-American students. Applicants will be evaluated and selected by a selection committee based on their academic achievement, evidence of community service, leadership qualities and the strength of their essays. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships to the children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen attending post–high school, undergraduate, and career technical education programs. The foundation is the nation's oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to military families, and their mission is to provide scholarship support to every eligible child of a Marine or Navy Corpsmen. In the 2019-20 academic year alone, they awarded over $8.2 million to more than 2,360 students, and will provide a similar level of support in the 2020-21 academic year. Their scholarships are for students currently pursuing, or planning to pursue, an undergraduate degree or career-focused program. Scholarship awards are need-based, and every eligible applicant receives a scholarship.
