    Rising NINTH GRADE Central Academy of Technology & Arts Admission Criteria for initial CATA Lottery 2021–2022 Revised 1.4.21

    • Application -must be received during the Application Period (see below). All materials requested must be submitted by the appropriate deadline. Late material/application will result in the student being ineligible for the lottery and admission to CATA.

    • Attendance – waived due to remote learning

    • Discipline -student may not have any suspensions, discipline or evidence of chronic disruptive behavior from the past.

    • Residency -student must be eligible to attend Union County Public Schools during the application period in order to apply.

    • Course Grades – Students must pass ALL courses (core and electives) attempted in 7th grade and 8th grade as of semester one (S1) with a 70 or higher. For students applying to the Pre-Engineering Academy you must earn an 80 or higher in 7th and 8th grade semester one (S1) math courses.

    • Assessment Scores – waived due to Covid19

    • Audition for entry into Performing Arts Academies – Dance, Music Production and Recording Arts (MPRA), and Theatre

    • Students applying to the Performing Arts Academies must successfully meet all audition criteria to be considered. Audition criteria are set by instructors and indicated on the CATA Performing Arts Academy Website - https://bit.ly/3pL9Oya. Your audition must be submitted via the Google Doc located on the CATA Performing Arts Academy Website - https://bit.ly/3pL9Oya by Monday, February 15th, 2021. Instructors will recommend for initial admission a set of students who met the audition requirements. Students meeting all general criteria (see above for entry requirements) will be placed into the lottery. Students not recommended for initial admission applications will be denied for entry into the lottery; however, should any spaces become available after the March 5th deadline for parents to accept seats, these students may be offered a seat according to the number of available seats.

    Central Academy of Technology & Arts Application Period

    • Applications must be submitted online via Scribbles, the online application system used by Union County Public Schools, opening Monday, January 4th, 2021 and must be submitted by Monday, February 15th, 2021. You will receive an email confirmation of your submission. If you do not receive this confirmation, your application was not submitted and you should contact Dr. Debbie Taylor, Director of School Assignment, at 704.296.1005 or Debbie.taylor@ucps.k12.nc.us.
    • The deadline is firm and we are unable to make exceptions due to computer problems, so we strongly recommend that you apply well in advance of the deadline.
    • Admission Criteria Submission - must be submitted by deadlines
      o Students currently enrolled in Union County Public Schools will have all required information to determine if they meet Admission Criteria.
      o Students from homeschool, private school, charter school, or non-UCPS school - Students that are not currently enrolled will be considered if there are spaces available after parents of UCPS students have had the opportunity to accept or decline seats offered. It is the responsibility of the student/parent to provide ALL entrance requirement information (including discipline, residency, course grades) by February 15, 2021. All documents should be uploaded into the Scribbles Application for the application to be considered
     

    Lottery Process

    • Students meeting the Central Academy of Technology & Arts Admission Criteria and Application Period deadlines described above will be placed in the CATA lottery.
    • The 9th Grade CATA Lottery will determine if a child is admitted in his/her desired academy (all Information Systems, Pre-Engineering, Medical Science, and Transportation).
    • Information Systems, Pre-Engineering, Medical Science, and Transportation spots are based on the students’ UCPS determined home school cluster for the upcoming year (2021-2022) through the lottery process. The home school cluster is the cluster that the student’s current address is assigned to for the upcoming school year.
    • For the Performing Arts Academies – Dance, Music Production and Recording Arts, and Theatre - if students are not selected for these academies after auditions, or are placed on waiting lists, the students will be placed into the lottery for their other Academy choice listed on their application if another academy choice was provided
    • Each Academy in the lottery has a set number of spots assigned to each UCPS home school cluster.
    • The 2021 – 2022 9th Grade CATA lottery will be held via Scribbles. Only students that meet the entrance criteria will go into the lottery.
      Notification and Admittance to Central Academy of Technology & Arts
    • For all Information Systems, Medical Science, Pre-Engineering, and Transportation Academy - Student/parents will be notified via Scribbles Dashboard on Friday, February 26th, 2021.
    • Parents must confirm or deny their child’s seat at CATA by Friday, March 5th, 2021. Reminders will not be made. If a response is not received, The Office of Student Assignment will treat this as a rejection of the offer, and that spot will be given to another student on the waitlist.
    • When accepting the Academy placement, parents/students are committing to a one-year commitment to Central Academy. In addition, students will not be able to change their academy while attending Central Academy.
    • Students that have been waitlisted will be notified via Scribbles on Friday, February 26th, 2021. If your child is waitlisted they will remain on the waitlist in case another student does not accept their spot.
    • Dance, Music Production and Recording Arts, and Theatre Academies - Students eligible to be entered into the lottery will be notified on Friday, February 26, 2021, and will have until March 5, 2021, to accept their seats. A lack of response will be taken as a rejection and the spot will be offered to a student on the waiting list.
    • Admission is only offered for the beginning of the 9th and 10th grade. No mid-year admission is available.

    Performing Arts Academies - students must participate in an audition (whether it is their first or second choice) for Dance, Music Production and Recording Arts (MPRA), and Theatre. Students not completing the audition (see requirements below) will have that Academy selection removed from their application.     • Dance, MPRA, and Theatre: Audition Based Selection

    o Meet all general Central Academy Admission Criteria
    o Participate in required Audition
    o Students will be recommended for admission based on Instructor Scoring of Audition, students meeting criteria, but not recommended for initial admission may also be placed on a waitlist
    o Students not meeting Audition criteria or placed on a waitlist, will be entered into the lottery if they identified an additional Academy selection

     



    Rising TENTH GRADE Admission 2021-2022 Central Academy of Technology & Arts Revised 1.4.21

    Admission opportunities are only available if there are openings in the rising 10th grade class. Admission is considered starting in mid-June through mid-August if spots open up, however, the CATA Application via Scribbles will be open Monday, January 4th, 2021 and close on Monday, February 15th, 2021. You MUST fill out the application during this time period if interested in entering the 10th Grade Lottery for CATA.

    Notification and Admittance to Central Academy of Technology & Arts

    • Admission opportunities are only available if there are openings in the rising 10th grade class. Admission is considered starting in mid-June through mid-August if spots open up. Since we cannot predict when or if a current student may withdraw, we cannot predict when you might be contacted. Typically the majority of placements take place in July. Once students begin to withdraw the 10th Grade Lottery process will begin via Scribbles and continue until all spots are filled.
    • Parents must confirm or deny their child’s seat via the Scribbles Dashboard within 48 hours. Reminders will not be made. If a response is not received, The Office of Student Assignment will treat this as a rejection of the offer, and that spot will be given to another student on the waitlist. CATA will post via Social Media when the 10th Grade Lottery process begins.
    • When accepting the Academy placement, parents/students are committing to a one year commitment to Central Academy. In addition, students will not be able to change their academy while attending Central Academy.
    • Dance, Music Production and Recording Arts, and Theatre Academies - families will be notified if their child is being offered admission as well via Scribbles Dashboard.
    • Admission is only offered for the beginning of the 9th and 10th grade. No mid-year admission is available.

    • Academy Pathways 2020-2021- Shows courses students would take each year for their academy (course offerings are reviewed each year, with sequence or course selection occasionally changing and revisions have not been made for the 2021-2022 school year yet).
