• Accountability  North Carolina public school students are required to meet statewide standards for promotion from grades 3, 5 and 8 and high school graduation. The standards, also called gateways, will ensure that students are working at grade level in reading, writing and mathematics before being promoted to the next grade.  This site gives policy information.

    Reading Rockets - This website is updated daily and offers comprehensive information on helping young children learn to read. The site is for parents, teachers, and other caring adults. It contains research-based articles on teaching kids to read and helping those who struggle; daily news headlines about reading; monthly recommended children's books; exclusive interviews with top children's book authors and illustrators; forums for sharing ideas and thoughts about kids and reading; and links to national and local literacy organizations and resources.
