Message from our Principal

  • Dear Porter Ridge Parents, Guardians, and Friends,

Thank you for taking the time to visit our site to learn more about Porter Ridge Elementary School. We are very fortunate to have a staff who works collaboratively to provide the optimal environment for children to learn and succeed. While we dropped a letter grade in our overall performance for the 2018-2019 school year, we were able to Meet Growth with our students. In addition, even though we had a slight decline with our math and reading scores, we still maintained an increase in our science scores.

The NC School Report Card includes important information about school and student performance, class sizes, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, and teacher quality. Report data is available for our school district and for the state’s education system as a whole.

I have enclosed with this letter a summary of our Report Card called the Report Card Snapshot. Our school’s full Report Card can be found on the NC School Report Cards’ website. Our school district’s report also is available on the Report Card website. School Report Cards are provided for regular public schools, charter schools and alternative schools.

All Porter Ridge Pirates are proud of our accomplishments and this report card only tells part of our story. At Porter Ridge, we are committed to making sure our instruction fits each student’s unique learning needs. Teachers are focused on individualized instruction using a Balanced Literacy Approach and a workshop model in reading, writing, and mathematics. We have enhanced our literacy instruction this year by incorporating a new, more structured small group model for reading instruction. Through a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), teachers work to ensure that we are meeting the needs of all students. The MTSS structure ensures we are having conversations about our core instruction as well as interventions for students who may need layers of additional support.

This year we are continuing to include a variety of experiences for our students to help them succeed by incorporating clubs during the school day. Our students also have use of the Discovery Lab to build on inquiry, critical thinking and problem-based learning. Beyond the school day, students can also participate in extra-curricular clubs such as Porter Notes and Girls on the Run.

We also value the importance of social and emotional learning. Through Positive Behavior Instruction and a strong emphasis on character education, students learn the importance of caring for others and modeling good character traits. Specific instruction and service projects throughout the year help our students understand how to be problem solvers, collaborate with others, and do their part to make the world a better place.

At Porter Ridge Elementary your involvement is very important to the success of our school! I encourage you to review our Report Card carefully, then feel free to contact me directly to discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding the Report Card. I also welcome your feedback regarding other interests you have in our school.

Thank you for allowing me to share this Report Card with you and thank you for supporting our efforts to provide your child with a high-quality education.

    Kristi Williford, Principal
