Walter Bickett Elementary School NC Report Card

  • September 11, 2017

    Dear Walter Bickett Families;

    During September the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction released School Performance Grades.  Based on older data from the 2016-2017 school year, Walter Bickett Elementary School was rated as a D school.  Our new rating that was released this year was that of an F school; however, this grade only reflects part of the story.  WBES is continuing to build on the expertise and collaborative work of the school staff who seek to maximize our students' academic growth, character, and social/emotional skills, as well as the high degree of parental support.  We anticipate that we will show improvement and growth in our state ranking during this 2017-2018 school year.  The WBES stakeholders are working toward academic success for all of our students and will continue to build upon these successes in the quest for continuous improvement.

    North Carolina General Assembly’s (GA) Session Law 2012-142 included specifications for reporting School Performance Grades (A, B, C, D, and F) for each public school and public charter school.  This grade is calculated using the performance composite from our school, how many students passed the test, and the growth index for our school.  The performance composite is worth 80% of our school’s overall grade and the growth index is worth 20%.  The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction will release the full NC School Report Cards in October.  As in previous years, the full report will provide a snapshot of each school’s performance including; student performance, class sizes, attendance, school safety, instructional resources and teacher quality.

    North Carolina’s school accountability program provides important information about Walter Bickett Elementary School; however, these numbers only tell part of the story.  There are many other indicators of school quality and areas of strength for WBES.  Our school embraces diversity and integrates global education through technology as a UCPS School of Technology. Technology is utilized with a 1:1 laptop initiative in grades 3 through 5 in preparation of being college and career ready.  In addition, we have equipped our classrooms with the EmpowerED furniture and technological equipment.  The Professional Learning Community at WBES promotes teacher collaboration and student learning. Relationships, partnerships, and positive communication among staff, students, and parents are of utmost importance at Walter Bickett Elementary. Working collaboratively, WBES stakeholders have achieved growth toward many successes over the last decade and will build upon these successes in the quest for continuous improvement.

    As these school grades were released, comparing school performance grades within the UCPS district should be done with caution.  Each school is different in size, program offerings, and student population.  As always, thank you for your continued support to hold the vision and trust the process for providing an environment where your child’s academic, social, and emotional needs are met, challenged, and celebrated.
