We are an A school! The last time schools received an official letter grade was for the 2018-19 school year; at that time, we earned our first A in school history. That our Wesley Chapel students, staff, parents, and volunteers have tackled all challenges over the past few years with a problem-solving “can-do” attitude is transparently evident in us again earning an A grade!
This grade is especially impressive when comparing Wesley Chapel to other elementary schools in North Carolina, as only 23 elementary schools across the state earned an A for the 2021-22 school year, and our students outperformed the state average in all accountability indicators! I am so proud of our entire Wesley Chapel School Community! Our students achieved high proficiency scores in math, reaching 90% in grades 3-5. The same students reached 80% proficiency in reading with a very high growth measure. In science, our students in grade 5 reached 86% proficiency. While not a part of our school’s official grade, our K-2 students’ proficiency levels mirror what our older students achieved. I attribute our success to our students, parents, and teachers working together during the 2021-22 school year.
This school year, we will focus on growing our readers and mathematicians while continuing to close delays in learning that occurred during the pandemic. Collaborating with parents, our staff strives to push our students toward achieving at their highest levels. To achieve this goal, we will continue with training and implementation of the Science of Reading and best practices with phonics instruction. In addition, we have a new Literacy Teacher Specialist and will have several tutors who will work directly with students in small groups; this is in addition to our exemplary classroom teachers and instructional assistant. Through high quality core instruction, intervention/remediation sessions, a wide range of specials area classes, small group and individual instruction, math problem solving sessions, and opportunities to be leaders, we again strive to grow our students.
Parents, we will continue to need your help and partnership to support the academic growth and overall well-being of each student at Wesley Chapel Elementary. Ensure your child arrives to school on time and is prepared, and support our instructional staff by helping your child with homework, and volunteer if you can. Our strong Parent/Teacher Organization is very active and makes Wesley Chapel Elementary a better place to learn, grow, and thrive. They host spirit nights, provide special recognition through awards and other activities, lead fundraising efforts, organize parent/student events, help fund instructional materials and safety initiatives, and provide teacher celebrations and appreciations.
The Wesley Chapel Eagles are working together with our school community and parents to nurture student growth and development each day. The faculty and staff at Wesley Chapel appreciate collaborating with our school community and parents as we prepare our students for present and future successes! Our Eagles soar to great heights!
Sincerely,
Dr. Mike Henderson, Principal
