Beginning Jan. 7, 2022, Union County Public Schools will no longer publish a weekly COVID-19 dashboard. COVID-19 data is available through Union County Public Health, the State of North Carolina and the Centers for Disease Control. Families will continue to receive daily communication when positive, impactful COVID-19 cases are reported at their child’s school.

On Feb. 1, the Union County Board of Education voted to end contact tracing and quarantine requirements for UCPS students and staff, beginning Monday, Feb. 7.

What is the guidance for staff/student COVID-19 cases?
- Students and staff who test positive for COVID-19
- Show symptoms of COVID-19
- Students or staff that come to school COVID-19 positive or show symptoms of COVID-19 will be sent home and kept in isolation until they can leave campus
COVID-19 positive and symptomatic staff and students should stay home and not come to school or report to work in the school facility until certain criteria, see below, have been met.

What is the criteria for returning to school or work at a school or office facility? (Adhere to the following process for allowing a student or staff member to return to school)
If a person has any of the following symptoms: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting, they should go home, stay away from others and call their health care provider.
If a person is diagnosed with COVID-19, or does not get a COVID-19 test, but has any of the above symptoms, the person may return to school when one of the following have been met:
- Five days have passed after their first day of symptoms and they have not had a fever for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medicine, and other symptoms are improving. Upon return to work or school, a face covering must be worn for five days.
- Received an alternative diagnosis from a health care provider, and the person has been fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medicine.
A person who has symptoms of COVID-19 and has received a negative test for COVID-19 may return to school if fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

Will schools continue to provide instructional support to students who are isolated due to a positive COVID-19 case?
Yes, schools will continue to provide additional instructional support to students who are positive for COVID-19 or are home due to experiencing symptoms.

Will communication still be sent to parents when schools and departments receive a positive impactful COVID-19 case?
Yes, communication will be sent to parents each time a positive impactful COVID case is reported.

Will schools be cleaned if a positive impactful case is reported?
Yes, the UCPS Facilities team will continue to provide additional cleaning when a positive impactful case is reported in a school or department.
