    Porter Ridge Elementary School was part of the Porter Ridge Cluster Schools International Festival that demonstrates student learning of global themes in the curriculum across the Elementary, Middle, and High School. Porter Ridge Elementary School students, parents, and teachers took part in International Festival at Poplin Elementary School on Thursday, April 20th, 2017.

  • Languages are All Around Us!

    What started as a simple “Fun Fact Find” for World Languages Week late March turned into a hall bulletin board about languages in the world. Students used the website www.factmonster.com to find facts about languages in general.

    Is the school year the same in other places? What grades are given in other schools in other countries? Can the students wear what they want to schools in other countries or do they have a dress code? These are some of the questions 4th Grade ESL students discussed as they talked about International Education Week in November.

    Our fourth grade students recently took a field trip to Kure Beach, North Carolina, where they had a chance to visit Fort Fisher and the North Carolina Aquarium. The students had a great time expanding their knowledge of both science and social studies topics they are learning about this year.

    Last month, under the leadership of Mrs. Amanda Furr and our first grade team, our students collected school supplies for students affected by Hurricane Matthew. Mrs. Furr collaborated with Mrs. Amanda Greene, our new AIG teacher, who had recently moved from the hurricane affected area and had personal connections in the area.

    Patriot Day is recognized as the the official day of remembrance for the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001. Many brave men and women risked their lives to help the victims. To expand on the importance of Patriot Day, our first grade students participated in Heroes Week.

  • Pinwheels for Syria from Porter Ridge Pirates!

    Porter Ridge Elementary students have participated in Students Rebuild Healing Classrooms Challenge! For each pinwheel that they made and mailed in, the Bezos Family Foundation donated $2.00 to the International Rescue Committee’s Healing Classrooms program to help Syrian children from conflict areas recover from crisis and grow into happy, healthy adults.

    Google Expeditions visited Porter Ridge Elementary on March 7, 2016. Porter Ridge students in grades 2 through 5 were able to take virtual field trips around the world through virtual reality viewers.

    December 16 through December 18 the second grade students at Porter Ridge Elementary School participated in our International Festival (iFest). Each class had to prepare information on different topics about their class’ adopted country. Research areas included language, currency, food, traditions, location, transportation, sports and games.

  • Kindergarten Skypes to Egypt!

    This year our kindergarten classes at Porter Ridge have had a special opportunity to partner with a classroom across the world! We have developed a friendship with a Kindergarten class in Cairo, Egypt. Our classroom has communicated weekly with the Egyptian class through Skype sessions and emails. This opportunity has taken the students from our small classroom and gave them an inside look at other children around the world.
