  • Nicole Darko is Teacher of the Year!

    Congratulations to 7th grade ELA teacher Nicole Darko, who has been selected as Porter Ridge MS 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Darko is a seventeen-year veteran with distinct experience in various educational positions, both nationally and internationally. She has been a classroom teacher, director of curriculum and instruction and a dean of instruction. Mrs. Darko lived and worked in Ghana, West Africa for five years before returning to the States to continue her work with middle schoolers. She joined the Porter Ridge Pirate family last year when she decided to return to the classroom. Mrs. Darko is an author, three-time Teacher of the Year winner and a TPT Teach for Justice Grant recipient.

  • Union County Christmas Bureau

    With the holidays quickly approaching, if you are in need of food and gifts for children 18 and under, you may apply to the Union County Christmas Bureau.     UCPS announces new meal option for 2020-2021 Educators understand that students need healthy meals to be successful in school. Although Union County Public Schools will offer a hybrid of in-person and virtual learning this year, meals will still be offered to all students, whether they are enrolled in Plan B or Plan D.

    Thank you to our School Counselors Mrs. Conway, Mrs. Lefko and Mrs. Manwell for supporting our students. They do an amazing job focusing on our students needs. Mrs. Conway has been a school counselor for 14 years. She has been at PRMS for 10 of those years! Mrs. Lefko has been a counselor for 5 years, with 4 of those here at PRMS. She lives in Matthews with her husband and two dogs and has two adult daughters that live in Charlotte. Mrs. Manwell has been a counselor for 8 years, with 3 of those being at Porter Ridge. Before that, she was a teacher.

  • UCPS provides 1,000+ 3D-printed protective gear and fabric face masks to Atrium Health Union

    On April 24, UCPS delivered more than 1,000 3D-printed protective gear items to Atrium Health Union. UCPS Career Readiness teachers spent the past two weeks making the items, which included 3D-printed headbands for face masks and shields, 3D-printed ear guards and fabric face masks.

  • Foot Orthosis Design Challenge

    Foot Orthosis Design Challenge Mrs. Harrell’s seventh grade Design and Modeling students were given an instant design challenge. In the STEM challenge, students had to design, build, and test a prototype of an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) for patients with cerebral palsy. Students watched a video and researched cerebral palsy and how an ankle foot orthosis could assist them. Students used rubric that included all their available materials and how much each material “cost”. Students were given a budget to “purchase” materials to create their prototype. Each student had to brainstorm and create a multi-view drawing of their own idea first. Then students worked in groups and presented their individual ideas to their group. They either chose one idea or combined ideas to create, “purchased” their materials from the classroom, built their AFO, and presented them to the class.
