  • Foot Orthosis Design Challenge

Foot Orthosis Design Challenge Mrs. Harrell’s seventh grade Design and Modeling students were given an instant design challenge. In the STEM challenge, students had to design, build, and test a prototype of an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) for patients with cerebral palsy. Students watched a video and researched cerebral palsy and how an ankle foot orthosis could assist them. Students used rubric that included all their available materials and how much each material “cost”. Students were given a budget to “purchase” materials to create their prototype. Each student had to brainstorm and create a multi-view drawing of their own idea first. Then students worked in groups and presented their individual ideas to their group. They either chose one idea or combined ideas to create, “purchased” their materials from the classroom, built their AFO, and presented them to the class.
