CATA’s NHS Chapter Fills Birthday Goody Bags for Needy

Mae Hinson donating goody bags

Mae Hinson, CATA’s 2018 National Honor Society (NHS) president, suggested collecting supplies and making goody bags for Bright Blessings for the NHS chapter’s required first semester project. Bright Blessings’ “birthday program brings [a] message of joy and positive recognition to homeless and impoverished children whose special day may otherwise go unnoticed.”hildren who may otherwise not have the means to celebrate their birthday can have a celebration at a local shelter or housing program. Each child receives a goody bag with a sweet treat, some needed items, and some fun items.

This was a whole-school collection drive where each class was asked to donate something specific such as fruit snacks, pens, small notebooks, etc. The NHS members then brought in some monetary donations to cover purchasing items such as stress balls and temporary birthday tattoos that might be more difficult to find. Once all the donations had been collected and additional items ordered, NHS members stayed after school and created an assembly line to get over 200 goody bags put together.

On a teacher workday, Mae Hinson came to CATA and picked up the boxes of goody bags to take to Bright Blessings. The organization was happy to accept the donation for their birthday parties. To learn more about Bright Blessings and the other services they provide, please go to their website at
