CATA Presents Rock of Ages, the Musical

Rock of Ages cast photo This year at Central Academy of Technology & Arts, students from all over the school will come together to perform Rock of Ages, a musical set in the 1980s that has all the best 80s music you know and love. Songs from the musical include “We Built this City,” “I Wanna Rock,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

First produced in 2005, Rock of Ages follows a young woman named Sherrie Christian (played by Miia Harris) on her journey to fame in West Hollywood in 1987. Along the way Sherrie meets Drew (played by Sayo Oni), a Bourbon Room busboy that dreams of playing rock and roll, Dennis Dupree (played by Aamar Culbreth), the owner of the Bourbon Room, Lonny (played by Henry Helms), Dennis’ assistant, and Stacee Jaxx (played by Matthew Warren), a famous rock god that’s called in to help save the Bourbon Room from destruction.

In honor of their 10 year anniversary, the touring cast of Rock of Ages is going around the country to bring the story of Sherrie Christian and the boys of the Bourbon Room for audiences enjoy. The show came around to Charlotte in December and some of the actors had to chance to see it and learn from it.

Interviews with the cast revealed what certain cast members have learned from being in the show. “[This show] has motivated me to do more. It kind of shows me things about the school too, that they’re not discriminatory of age or what stage [of acting] you’re in,” Jazelle Pingel, a freshman at CATA, talks about what this show has taught her and how it has impacted her as her first time performing at CATA.

Some of the leads also have some advice for students at CATA who are thinking of joining the Spring musical next year, “Just put yourself out there because you never know what opportunities could come out of it,” says Sayo Oni, a senior.

“It’s a lot of fun and there is plenty of great music. It’s also a great throw back [to the 80s],” Paige Sampson, a junior, comments on why everyone should come out and watch this year's school musical, Rock of Ages.
