Weddington Middle EC teacher is recognized for excellence in the classroom

Wednesday, Feb. 24 was a very special day for Exceptional Children (EC) teacher Ebony Johnson. The Weddington Middle teacher received the Extraordinarily Educator of Excellence Award and was recognized by the state’s EC staff, her peers and leaders from the Union County Public School’s EC Department.

Exceptional Children program directors and coordinators across the state were invited to recognize Extraordinarily Exceptional Educators in their district throughout the 2020-2021 academic year.

Johnson’s peers recommended her for the award and in the nomination letter, they said “Ms. Johnson goes above and beyond, every single day, for her students, especially during an extremely challenging year. All Special Education teachers have an extraordinary gift, but Ms. Johnson astounds us on a daily basis with her compassion and abilities to teach students.”

Johnson has been an EC teacher for 13 years. Prior to working at Weddington Middle, she taught at Benton Heights Elementary for 10 years.

“I was absolutely surprised and in awe that I was chosen,” Johnson said. “I appreciate being selected and value those who thought I was worthy enough to receive this award.  I know that there are several EC teachers within UCPS that are just as worthy as I am to receive this award, so I am forever honored that I was selected.”
