Letterland Comes to UCPS
Letterland Comes to Union County Public Schools
When Jason turned five and went to kindergarten, he knew the promise to read was his at last. Soon, he hoped, he was going to learn to read.
On August 22, 2022, UCPS EC elementary teachers and assistants took a small step meant to help students like Jason learn to read. Elementary ECS and CBSS teachers and teacher assistants participated in initial Letterland professional development.
" My students always struggle with learning letter sounds and names. I am excited about incorporating Letterland into their learning. The characters and story elements will help with retention as they are so much more memorable than symbols," Amy Hunsaker, Waxhaw Elementary EC teacher, shared after attending Initial Letterland professional development.
Letterland is a structured literacy curriculum created to teach phonics using a story-based approach. The story logic engages students, leading to long-term retention of concepts. Letterland is wonderfully multi-sensory. It activates multiple learning pathways through music, actions, alliteration, movement, song, art, games, and role-plays. Letterland is a research-based, explicit, systematic phonics program that helps teachers with instructing foundational reading skills.
Letterland curriculum resources will be available to UCPS elementary EC teachers who teach in ECS and CBSS classroom settings.
