Alcorn Named Morehead-Cain Scholar
CHS is proud and honored to announce Michael Alcorn as our first recipient of the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship. The Morehead Cain Scholarship is a four-year, fully funded educational experience for students of the highest caliber at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Michael shared his scholarship journey with us.
“The interview process was very enjoyable. Although I was terrified up until my actual interviews, the staff and alumni were incredibly supportive and kind. I had four short interviews that were almost like student government scenarios and then I had one long interview about myself. Every other finalist was insanely qualified but every staff member made me feel special,” said Michael.
Results of the application were to be posted last Friday, March 8.
“All of Friday I was incredibly nervous. I knew that the results were to come out at 5 p.m. so Alice Wu, my best friend, and I went to the gym to de-stress. We were both on the elliptical and I decided to check my portal around 4 p.m. and I noticed that an update was posted to my application. I clicked on the notification and completely freaked out when I saw the word "Congratulations!" I cannot thank Alice enough for being such an amazing and supportive best friend as she dropped her entire workout to jump in excitement and help me call as many people as possible,” shared Michael.
At first Michael had many schools in mind when beginning the application process.
“I looked at plenty of prestigious private and public schools but after visiting Carolina during finalist weekend, I realized that it was my home. Although I was born in Ohio, I have been raised in North Carolina for most of my life and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. UNC-Chapel Hill is an amazing school and the Morehead-Cain community is something that is absolutely priceless. I plan on studying Computer Science, but the Morehead-Cain has opened up so many options for me. I am finally able to pursue whatever field I am truly interested in.”
“Every summer I will be partaking in a Summer Enrichment Program through the Morehead-Cain. I have not officially heard back where I will be traveling this summer, but I ranked Alaska as my number one choice. I will attend NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) in Outward Bound for the first summer trip and push myself to new physical limits,” Michael said.
“One thing I really want to do is thank all of my supportive peers and staff members at Cuthbertson High School. Specifically, I want to thank Mrs. Wren for writing an amazing recommendation and being a phenomenal teacher along with Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Hammersmith for being so encouraging throughout the entire process. I would also like to thank the guidance department and scholarship committee for nominating me for the scholarship as well as my family and friends for believing in me when I didn't myself. Finally, I would like to thank the Morehead-Cain staff and alumni for treating me with so much kindness, respect, and support. I am so excited to join their family this year as a scholar.”
“Personally, Cuthbertson High School has allowed me to be the best student, mentor, and individual I can be and I would not have changed it for anything.”
Congratulations, Michael, we are so proud of you!
