On Friday October 4, 2019, seventeen AFJROTC cadets from Parkwood High and Cuthbertson High flew on a 3.5 hour C-17 aeromedical evacuation training mission with the NC Air National Guard at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The C-17 is a massive cargo plane with flight and medical crews for this mission.
After takeoff, cadets spent time with the pilots in the cockpit, where they learned about military flight operations and aircraft instruments and equipment. In the cargo compartment they learned about military medical careers from a flight nurse, and for lunch they had an inflight meal of subs.
Also, on the trip cadets were able to view the ground and horizon from several windows. The route of flight took us from Charlotte to Asheville, then to Roanoke and Norfolk Virginia, and finally southbound along the coast to Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston before returning to Charlotte.
Visibility was mostly clear, and the mountains and beaches were beautiful from our cruise altitude of 9000 feet. Cadets all had an unforgettable experience on this very special field trip!
The CHS cadets who participated were Meadow Brown, Alexis Pinkney, Jenna Sheinhartz, Matthew Stein, and Bryant Torres.
