Updates for the New School Year

POWER SCHOOL AND STUDENT SCHEDULES

All students should be able to see their schedules in powerschool.  Due to a technical issue bus boarding passes have been delayed.  We will mail schedules and bus passes once this issue is resolved.

START AND END TIME FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL

Recently the UCPS School Board voted to change the start and end time for middle schools.  Our new start time will be 9:05 and students will leave the building at 4:05.

Students will be permitted to enter the building at 8:35 and will head directly to their homeroom.

WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT WHEN THEY ARRIVE AT SCHOOL THIS YEAR

Please watch a brief video below on what students can expect when they arrive at school this year.

What students can expect when they arrive at school video

EXAMPLES OF WHAT CLASSES WILL LOOK LIKE

Below is an example of what your students first block class will look like.  If you are a Plan B or D student we are expecting our students to join in to their teachers online conference during the last 20 minutes of their class.

First Block

8:35-9:05  Homeroom

9:05-9:25  Live instruction in class

Remote students watch video at home

9:25-9:55  Independent Practice for all students

9:55-10:05  Mask Break as needed

10:05-10:25 Whole Class & Online Conference

2020 Block Breakdown

When students are in school or at home they will follow their assigned schedule during the day.  For example first block will begin at 9:05 and end at 10:25.

We expect that all of our Plan B students at home to watch their assigned lesson during this time.  The last 20 minutes of every class all teachers will begin a live conference with all students to review any questions or concerns students might have.

 PLAN D STUDENTS

Students who have selected Plan D are permitted to participate in these live sessions if they choose.  Even though All Plan D students selected the self pace option they are encouraged to participate in these live sessions during their assigned block.  If a student cannot attend during their assigned block they may visit another block’s live session.

CHROMEBOOK DISTRIBUTION

We will continue laptop distribution this week. Families with the last name starting with L-Z will pick up their laptop on August 12th from 10-12 or 4-6pm.

We are asking that all families stay in the car and staff will deliver the laptops to your car.  To ensure that this is a quick process we are asking if families can write their students first and last name and grade on a large piece of paper and place that in the windshield upon arrival as well as wear a mask for the safety of our staff members.

Any new 7th or 8th grade family can pick up their laptop on this  date as well.

All families must complete the Chromebook Parent/Student agreement below in order to receive  their laptop.

https://forms.gle/tF2SC6CwxLexXBgSA - English

https://forms.gle/wFXUCuRRVTyj8iJ5A - Spanish

All students will be receiving a laptop, whether families have chosen Plan B or Plan D.

VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE

Typically we would prefer to have all parents come in and meet our teachers at the start of the year.  Unfortunately this year we cannot accommodate this schedule.  This year we will conduct a virtual open house.  Teachers will be posting their back to school talk for families by Wednesday August 12 at 5pm.  Families can visit the CMS Teacher directory to locate their teachers video.

Thank you to everyone for being patient during this difficult time.  Our goal is to ensure that all of our students and staff are safe during this difficult time.

I hope everyone enjoys their last week of the summer!  We are looking forward to seeing everyone next week! Have a great evening.
