The agricultural program at East Union Middle started in 2017, and now has an exciting new addition to the program - a full sized greenhouse! The agricultural program has gained interest among East Union students over the last 3 years which has allowed the program to add a second teacher and grow the FFA (Future Farmers of America) program from 10 to 50 members as of last year.
The growing program thrives off student engagement and hands-on learning opportunities, which sparked the desire for a full size greenhouse that would allow full classes of students to be able to use it at once. This greenhouse will allow East Union students to learn various components of the greenhouse and horticulture industry, preparing them for possible future careers in agriculture. This hands-on learning experience will also provide important career skills such as planning, project management, and critical thinking.
East Union FFA members will now be able to have full-scale plant sale fundraisers where we can sell plants to the community to raise money for our program. This will allow students to become more involved in the community as they learn to raise plants, care for them, and provide a product for community members to enjoy. In the future, we hope to add a community garden around the greenhouse for the community to enjoy and work together with FFA members and agriculture students.
This is a very exciting opportunity for all present and future East Union students, families, staff, and our local community!
