Chess Club

Ms. Whitley and Mr. Holmes, third grade teachers at Fairview, lead the school’s Chess Club. Chess Club is open to boys and girls in grades 3 through 5. Ms. Whitley had never played chess before sponsoring the club. It was so much fun for the girls and boys to teach her to play. Now in her second year, she continues to allow the students to show her new techniques.

The game of chess helps boys and girls learn to concentrate, think logically, overcome obstacles, spot patterns and categorize information. It helps with the development of problem-solving skills, planning, patience, focus of thought and self-discipline.

Boys and girls in Chess Club will be experiencing a new challenge this February with the beginning of tournament play. Games last for fifteen minutes. When the clock reaches zero, players count the points they have earned by capturing their opponent’s pieces. This makes chess a more quick and fast pace game, like March Madness.
