Countdown to Kindergarten: UCPS provides well-rounded educational experience for its youngest students

Kindergarten is an exciting moment in time for young students and their families.

It’s one of the first steps a child takes in their educational journey and it sets the foundation for developing independence, confidence and positive behavior both in and out of the classroom.

That’s why, from the first bell in the morning to the last bell of the school day, UCPS kindergartners are fully engaged in developing new skills and a love for learning that will set them up for success in college, career and life.

If you walk into a Dual Language Immersion Program class, which is offered at 12 UCPS elementary schools, you will find kindergarten students learning to speak, read and write in Spanish or Mandarin.

If you peek into another classroom, you may find students engaged in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) or Makerspace activities that encourage innovation and collaboration. Or they may be participating in hands-on arts education activities that include playing a violin in music class or creating artwork made of clay in art class.

The availability of digital resources, which are unmatched by other school systems in the region, combined with powerful instructional practices challenge even our youngest students to uncover and engage in opportunities that focus on problem solving and making real world connections.

And special education and related services for eligible children with disabilities are designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment and independent living.

Our highly qualified teachers empower students to think critically while also nurturing their creativity in a safe learning environment. And our focus on character and skills development prepares students to be leaders as well as responsible, caring and service-oriented.

From global education classes to coding clubs, UCPS’s competitive academic offerings paired with robust STEM and arts education programs provide a well-rounded educational experience for even our youngest students.

Kindergarten registration for the 2019-20 school year kicks off on Feb. 1, and UCPS is here to help guide you and your family through the enrollment process.
