On Saturday, May 18th, a team of over twenty students from Marvin Ridge raced in the Charlotte Dragon Boat Festival. The Marvin Ridge National Chinese Honor Society’s team, Inspiration Nation, competed in three races, winning first place in the high school division for the sixth year in a row! The team has participated in practices and meetings over the past month to prepare for the race. With twenty rowers and one drummer in the boat, Inspiration Nation brought great enthusiasm to their races on Lake Norman, with their fastest time being just over one minute.
Between races, students also participated in numerous cultural activities at the Asian Festival of Charlotte, ranging from calligraphy to dance performances and martial arts demonstrations, as well as a variety of cultural cuisines and informational booths.
Dragon Boat racing is a tradition that dates back over 2500 years, originating as a sport and festival in Southern China around the Yangtze River. Students were excited to have the opportunity to take part in this interesting part of Chinese culture, and the team hopes to return next year to continue their winning streak. Go Mavs!
