On Friday, November 22, 2019, 4th graders from New Salem Elementary School were exposed to college life by visiting Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. It was a long day, but worth every minute!
Students participated in a number of activities while on campus at App State. First they toured and actively engaged in the Rock Museum in the Rankin Science Building. Next, our 4th graders moved outdoors to the Rock Garden and sifted through sedimentary rock to find fossils and identify them. We enjoyed the Rock Garden so much, our group had an outdoor picnic there for lunch!
After lunch, students watched an “App Experience” video and had some up-close and personal Q&A time with current App State students. Our staff members were proud of how engaged our 4th graders were. Their questions were thoughtful and on point!
Lastly, our group was challenged to a Scavenger Hunt that led us through a campus-wide tour. Students were challenged with reading maps, using the resources at hand, and relying on each other (teamwork), to complete each part.
But wait, we couldn’t leave App State without a picture with the Yusef Statue! We had a blast, learned a lot, and grew relationships! Thank you, Appalachian State University, for hosting!
