On April 12-14, fifth-grade students went to Camp Thunderbird on Lake Wylie. They took classes taught by camp Thunderbird staff that included wildlife ecology, forest ecology, advanced aquatic ecology, and fish seining and dissection. On the last day, students were able to go on the Camp Thunderbird Zipline or climb the Alpine Tower. Each student made a goal for themselves at the beginning of the trip and, upon reflection, on the last day, students were able to make some new friends, learn something new, overcome a fear, and many more.
This trip has become a New Salem tradition started by Christa Austin. We are honored to carry it on in her memory.
