New Staff @ New Salem

Welcome to the New Salem Family!

Mrs. Peggy Herman-EC TA

"I am a graduate of Pfeiffer University with a bachelor’s degree in health administration. Since 2016, I have worked as a Clinic Administrator for Novant Health, where I manage a family and sports medicine practice.  After working in healthcare for over 25 years, I have been called to make a change and pursue a career in education.  My goal is to make a difference by building nurturing relationships with each child and to be a positive presence in the classroom.

With my husband of 40 years, we love to visit with our family & friends, spend time playing with our 3 wonderful grandchildren, traveling, and hiking."

Ms. Kate Gragg-1st Grade Teacher

"Hello, New Salem Knights!
My name is Kate Gragg, and I am so excited to be joining the New Salem family this year. This will be my second year of teaching after teaching for one year in South Carolina. I am from Shelby, North Carolina, and graduated from Wingate University in 2021. I missed this area so much after I graduated, and I am thrilled to be coming back!
Teaching young minds has always been one of my biggest passions and something I have always known I wanted to do. I believe all students deserve a school environment where they feel safe, accepted, and loved. I am so excited to start the school year and help my students develop a love of learning through challenging and engaging lessons and activities. I am very thankful to be a member of this team at New Salem to help all children love learning!
In my free time, I enjoy listening to podcasts, spending time with my friends, family, and boyfriend, and playing with my sweet new puppy Murphy! I also love crafts of all kinds and cheering on the Wingate Bulldogs. I am so grateful to be joining this community, and I’m excited to meet you all!"

Who am I?

I am a native of Marshville, NC. I attended New Salem Elementary for Kindergarten, but then moved and attended Marshville Elementary, East Union Middle, and Forest Hills High. I currently live in Monroe with my husband, TJ, and our two daughters, Aria and Chandler. I enjoy going to the beach, reading, watching the Tar Heels, and spending time with friends and family.

Educational Philosophy

School had such a positive influence on my life, so I became an educator in hopes of doing the same for others. I am passionate about helping others become the best version of themselves. I believe that positive relationships, rigor, and high expectations allow students and teachers to optimize their potential and success for themselves, the school, and the community.

Educational Background

For undergrad, I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Teaching Fellow. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a minor in Math, Science, and Technology. For graduate school, I received my Masters in Educational Leadership from High Point University as part of the High Point Leadership Academy (Principal Fellows).

Educational Work History

I taught at Rocky River Elementary in UCPS from 2014-2021 teaching 3rd and 5th grade. I also served as Lighthouse Coordinator for our Leader in Me Program and helped the school achieve Lighthouse Certification in 2019 and re-certification in 2021.

For the 2021-2022 school year, I completed my administrative internship at Forest Hills High School and served as the interim 6th-grade assistant principal for a short period of time at the Health Sciences Academy at Monroe Middle School.

I am excited to join the New Salem family and look forward to a successful year helping our students THRIVE!
