1st Grade Celebrates Thanksgiving

First grade learned about and celebrated Thanksgiving with a variety of hands-on activities. During our nonfiction unit, students wrote how to make a pie and read various ways to make pies. All classes enjoyed making pumpkin and vanilla pies. Students mixed vanilla pudding with milk in a baggie. Then they added the pumpkin mix. For many of them, it was their first experience making pies.

Another activity the children enjoyed was making their own bracelets and necklaces with beads and pipe cleaners. They used their beads to tell the Thanksgiving story. Students decorated and wore their necklaces and bracelets throughout the school day.

In Mrs. Becker’s Class, first graders learned about how Native Americans made canoes.  They tried a STEAM activity, and made canoes out of Play-Doh.  Although most canoes didn’t float, they went back and redesigned the canoes to make them float.
