Congratulations Marion Millican for being honored by the NC mathematics education community.
At its annual meeting last week, the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics awarded the North Carolina Collaborative for Mathematics Learning its 2018 Innovator Award. The Innovator Award recognizes outstanding and noteworthy contributions to mathematics education in North Carolina by having founded, initiated, pioneered, or developed some program of service that benefits mathematics education across the state.
The Collaborative is a research-practice partnership of researchers from six universities in the UNC system, STEM leaders from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and mathematics educators from school districts across the state to support the implementation of the NC K-12 Mathematics Standards. Since its beginning in 2016, the partnership has developed, shared, and refined a collection of implementation resources for teachers, coaches, and district curriculum leaders, including: over 30 research and practice briefs summarizing evidence from research for practitioners, grade level research-based instructional frameworks that group and sequence new standards for instruction, over 50 hours of online professional development available for NC teachers, and instructional resources collected, organized, and shared in coordination with other groups and statewide initiatives. The Collaborative’s research aims to build knowledge about resources, practices, and structures that can promote coherence when implementing new state academic standards.
Marion Millican has been an invaluable partner, and the Collaborative’s success and its impact are a direct result of her leadership, expertise, passion, and commitment to the teachers and students of our state.. Please join me in congratulating Marion Millican for being honored by the NC mathematics education community.
