Pirates come to Benton Heights School of the Arts
Mihaela Sanchez-Mocanu and Laura Bahmanyar, ESL teachers at Benton Heights brought the book The Pirate Substitute alive in the classrooms of third and fourth grade classrooms. The teachers’ focus was modeling how to identify literal and nonliteral language and using context clues and prior knowledge to figure out the meaning. Students participated in many activities to distinguish between examples of literal and nonliteral phrases. One activity used was the inside/outside circle from Ellevation Strategies, which all teacher across the county have access to this year.
