The Influence of Black History on Art

African American artists have the spotlight in Ms. Miles class this month! 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students completed various projects inspired by Black artists and African American art history.

6th grade focused on Martin Luther King Jr. and illustrator Kadir Nelson to create their own “I Have A Dream” pieces.

7th grade looked at artist Faith Ringgold and created “Memory Quilts” based off their own memories and Ringgold’s book “Tar Beach.”

8th graders studied various African American artist and completed a choice-based assignment, projecting their own beliefs about race and society.

By looking at Black History through the universal lens of art, PWMS students were able to gain new perpective on the contributions of Black artists to history.
