With hard work and dedication, this year’s Wrestling Team captured the Southwest 4A Conference Dual Team Championship and were named Conference Tournament Champions. They finished their regular season with a 27-7 record and a 7-0 conference record.
When asked about this year’s successful season, Coach Randy Durbin stated, “A key to our success is that all of our wrestlers made a commitment to the program, participated in off season workouts, and went to wrestling camp during the summer.”
A large senior class also helped guide the team to a successful season. This year’s group of seniors have won three conference championships in the last four years.
Senior wrestler Alex Gallagher added, “What made this season so successful for me is having parents that supported me throughout the years and having supportive teammates who worked with me on moves. One hardship I overcame was the fact that you’re not going to win every single match. In order to win, you first have to lose. When you face defeat, you know that you’re not done yet, so you get back up and keep training.”
Junior Josh Barnes commented, “For a sport that requires as many different skills as wrestling, success is not an option without hard work and commitment.”
Fourteen team members will be wrestling in the 4A West Individual Regionals at Davie High School Feb. 8th and 9th. The top four wrestlers in the regional tournament will qualify for the state tournament that will be held on February 14th and 15th at the Greensboro Coliseum.
