PR wrestlers made states this year

Hasty and Carnes at States

February 2022 was a big month for the PRHS Wrestling team. Three members made states this year, one female and two males. Congratulations are in order for junior Zoey Green who competed in the Women’s State Championship and for juniors Christian Hasty and Nathan Carnes who competed in the Men’s State Championship!

Carnes and Hasty both earned distinctions at states. Carnes won the title of “NC State 4A Wrestling 220 lb Champion” and MVP for the NC 4A classification. Hasty finished in the Top 8 in the NC 4A classification for his weight class!

When asked about their experience wrestling at states, the wrestlers commented:

My experience at states was really good. It was awesome to be able to wrestle girls for a high school tournament,” Green said.

“It was a crazy feeling to experience winning states especially in the coliseum in front of all those people. It's really awesome being the school’s first state champ because that's been my biggest goal since freshman year,” Carnes said.Christian Hasty wrestles at states

“It was very nerve-racking and exciting at the same time,” Hasty said.

Zoey Green competing at statesTheir coach, PRMS teacher Randy Durbin, said, “Nathan Carnes and Christian Hasty wrestled well at the State Tournament.  Christian finished in the top 8 at 138 pounds. Nathan won the state championship at 220 pounds becoming the first state champion in school history. Nathan also is the first 3-year state qualifier and the first multi-state placer in school history (Nathan finished third last year). Nathan earned the Most Valuable Wrestler award for the 4A classification. This is voted on by all the 4A coaches during the state tournament. I am very proud of how Nathan and Christian wrestled and showed great sportsmanship during the state championships.

Zoey Green is the first female wrestler at Porter Ridge to qualify for the North Carolina Women's State Wrestling Tournament. Zoey wrestled most of her matches as a starter for the men's team and was a key factor to the team's success this season.

Congratulations to the 2021-2022 Pirate Wrestling Team!
