Rocky River Elementary receives thousands in donations from Burlington clothing store

On Friday, Sept. 10 Rocky River Elementary was presented with a $5,000 check from Burlington stores and to further assist in students’ education. UCPS receives Burlington donation

To celebrate a new store's opening, Burlington donates $5,000 to a local school and Rocky River Elementary was chosen. The donation will be equally divided among the school’s classrooms so that teachers can order supplies and resources through’s online marketplace.

Jennifer Ross, a first-grade teacher at Rocky River Elementary plans on buying phonics books for her classroom so her students can expand on the skills they are learning every day.  "It is wonderful to have the community support," said Mrs. Ross. "As teachers, we buy so much out of pocket. So, I would have probably bought the books anyway, but not having to come out of pocket just means a lot."

The check was presented during the grand opening and ribbon-cutting event for Burlington’s new store in Monroe. Rocky River Elementary assistant principal Stephanie Funderburk was in attendance to receive the check, along with other UCPS administration and cabinet staff.

Burlington management personnel, store manager Steve Kania, and assistant manager Jose Sepulveda were excited to present Rocky River Elementary with the check, "One of our sayings is that 'we are a caring company' and we truly live that every day," said Kania. "It means a lot to me that I work for a company that walks the talk and they treat everybody the right way."

“This could not go to a better group of teachers, they are deserving of all this and way more,” said Cathy Haney, Rocky River Elementary principal.
