Trevor Lan receives John H. Crowder Service Award
The John H. Crowder Award was presented to a senior at Marvin Ridge High School during the Nov. 1 Board of Education meeting. Students who receive this award are academically successful and have an established history of community service.
Throughout the past four years, Trevor Lan has been dedicated to the Union County community in many ways. He is constantly looking for ways to get involved and make a positive, mission-driven impact through community service. As a freshman, he raised funds, collected needed items and cooked meals for the Union County Shelter, which sparked his interest in community service. Since then, he has continued his engagement through his work with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Take on Sports, the National Honor Society, B'Nai Brith Youth Organization and the Student Leadership Committee on School Climate.
Trevor was nominated as a Candidate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Student of the Year Campaign during his sophomore year. The campaign is a seven-week initiative in which nominated high school students participate in a fundraising challenge to benefit the organization. Trevor, alongside a co-candidate, managed a team of 40 individuals who raised $140,000, giving them a second-place finish.
The following year, Trevor was named an ambassador and mentored two local Charlotte teams in the same campaign. As a result, he was named Vice Chair of Mentorship for the organization’s Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign Student Board, where he coordinated over 20 mentors and 30 teams. Additionally, Trevor has continued his involvement with the organization through their Team in Training Initiative, which raises funds through a competition in endurance events. He has already raised almost $2,000 as he is training for the Kiawah Half Marathon.
As a competitive baseball player for the last 10 years, Trevor understands the life lessons developed through sports. He has spent the last five years volunteering with Take on Sports, a local charity that brings together children with special needs and local students through sports. Each Sunday he attends games where he assists special-needs children and builds camaraderie.
Through his work with the Jewish Youth Group B'Nai Brith Youth Organization, Trevor has served at homeless shelters and food pantries across the world. He has also led local fundraisers to raise money for Ukrainians affected by the current war.
Lastly, he has become involved with both the National Honor Society and the Student Leadership Committee on School Climate to better the Marvin Ridge community through service, tutoring and leadership.
