Wingate Elementary's Yaronda Kilgo named 2025 Southwest Regional Teacher of the Year
On Nov. 21, a routine staff meeting at Wingate Elementary became a touching surprise celebration for teacher Yaronda Kilgo. Kilgo, the Union County Public Schools (UCPS) current Teacher of the Year, received the exciting news that she had been selected as the 2025 Southwest Regional Teacher of the Year.
Her colleagues responded with cheers and applause as representatives from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the current North Carolina Teacher of the Year, and several former Southwest Regional Teachers of the Year joined in to mark the moment. Kilgo’s family also attended, sharing in her joy and pride as she received the unexpected honor.
Principal Jasmine Stowe shared her admiration for Kilgo. “Yaronda is a natural leader. Her students know they are valued, and parents trust her to bring out the best in their children. She is the teacher every parent hopes for, every principal dreams of having in their building, and every student remembers for a lifetime.”
Staff also heard touching stories about Kilgo, including a memory shared by the 2024 Southwest Regional winner Sarah Lefebvre, who taught Kilgo’s daughter in the past. As a child, her daughter proudly told classmates, “My mom is going to school to become a teacher.” That determination and passion, which once inspired her daughter, now fuel Kilgo’s approach to teaching, where she brings her energy, creativity, and deep care to every lesson.
The celebration included a video featuring heartfelt messages from students. They described Kilgo as someone who makes their days brighter, encourages them to do their best, and creates a classroom where everyone feels valued.
Overwhelmed by the recognition, Kilgo shared her gratitude with those in attendance. “I’m grateful. I’m honored. I feel proud of myself,” she said. “This is a lot of emotions at once, but I am so thankful to everyone who supported me along the way. Hearing my daughter’s words and my students’ appreciation has been incredibly moving. It means everything to know that I make a difference.”
With eight years of teaching experience, Kilgo has built a reputation as an educator who inspires students, supports her colleagues and strengthens the school community. Her recognition as the 2025 Southwest Regional Teacher of the Year honors her impact and dedication. She will now compete for the 2025 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year.
The event ended with a round of applause, celebrating Kilgo’s achievements and the profound difference she continues to make in the lives of those around her.
