Braylin Hartis receives the John H. Crowder Service Award
For over three decades, John H. Crowder dedicated his life to supporting the youth of Union County. In honor of his enduring contributions and lasting impact, the Union County Board of Education presented the John H. Crowder Service Award for June to a Parkwood High senior.
Braylin Hartis is a distinguished Airforce JROTC cadet. In his first semester, he served as a flight sergeant for Alpha Flight, where he demonstrated exemplary leadership skills. In the Air Force JROTC, cadets are grouped into "flights" — smaller units that allow students to develop leadership skills and learn from one another in a team-based environment. Braylin also assumed command of the Kitty Hawk Honor Society, earning a well-deserved promotion to cadet second lieutenant. His professionalism was evident through his active participation in numerous Color Guard events and his contributions to the precision and success of the NC-20067 Drill Competition team.
During his second semester, Braylin stepped into new leadership roles, moving from flight commander to overseeing the community service and finance sections—greatly improving the corps’ organization and mission effectiveness. When he returned as Alpha Flight commander, he led his flight to earn the prestigious Top Academic Flight Award. Under his leadership, the Color Guard team also achieved a first-place overall victory in the Flight Drill event at the Fall Drill Competition.
From his third semester to the present, Braylin has served with distinction as group commander for two consecutive semesters, skillfully leading more than 80 cadets. Under his guidance, the unit has thrived, with a clear emphasis on excellence, character and discipline. His dedication was further recognized when he received the Patriotic Award at the Monroe Air Show.
Braylin is joining the United States Marine Corps, with a departure date of July 2025.
