Driving generations home safely: Diann Gillis
After 31 years behind the wheel, bus driver Diann Gillis has retired, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and care for the students she transported safely every day.
Gillis began her UCPS career in November 1991, initially unsure if driving a school bus was the right fit.
“I thought I’d only stay six months,” she said.
But the more time she spent on the job, the more comfortable she became—thanks to supportive coworkers, helpful training and a genuine connection with students and families.
Encouraged by a friend who was already a bus driver, she decided to apply despite initial worries about noise and student behavior. Her training helped her stay calm and earn respect on the bus.
“You don’t argue with the kids,” she said. “You don’t let them see you sweat; you maintain yourself.”
Before she arrived, some routes had high turnover due to challenging students. She became the first driver to hold one route long-term, building trust through patience and consistency.
“The schools and training prepared me for tough situations, but most days with students were good,” she said.
Throughout her career, Diann drove routes serving elementary through high school students, most recently South Providence Schools and Rock Rest Elementary. She remembered the cooperation and kindness of many students and how important it was to build relationships.
“I made good relationships with the kids and their families,” she said.
Now retired since February, Diann spends time in ministry, joining her daughter and son-in-law on outreach efforts in various counties and providing food and clothing to those in need. She also studies biblical teachings at home, enjoying this next chapter of her life.
When asked what made UCPS special, Diann’s answer was, “It’s the people. Everyone treats you with respect, and it’s a comfortable, caring place to work.”
For anyone considering a career as a bus driver, Diann offers some encouraging advice.
“Don’t listen to scary stories. The job is rewarding, the training is great and you get to make a real difference in students’ lives.”
