Lin Zhu (Marvin Elementary)

What do you teach and why did you become a teacher?

I'm teaching the DLI (Dual Language Immersion) Mandarin program at Marvin Elementary School. My childhood dream was to become a teacher. I enjoy seeing young minds grow.

How do you show your school spirit?

Prepare ALL students to succeed is the spirit of our school. I have faith in every student and create an inclusive space for all students to feel safe to learn. Having my students flourish and thrive, academically and socially, shows school spirit.

What or who inspires you?

My husband, Joe, is the person who inspires me. He always encourages me to think outside of the box. Spending time with kids also inspires me to see things from different perspectives.

In which other teacher’s class would you like to enroll for a day? Why?

I would like to enroll in Mrs. Midkiff's class for a day, because she's such an experienced teacher, a fun person and a great leader. She decorates her room for the body system lessons – making her room a fun and inviting environment. There must be a lot of fun and learning happening there!

What is one of your hidden talents?

I’m a world traveler. I have a pair of magic eyes to see beautiful things in people!

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

When you can't see what is ahead of you, please slow down. It applies to when you are driving and when you are making decisions for your future. By slowing down, you will have more time to figure out what's happening on the road ahead and make the right decision. I learned this from a car accident.

What is a professional motto or quote that you “work” by?

"Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them." – Lady Bird Johnson

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." – Nelson Mandela

What do you enjoy most about working in UCPS?

My colleagues. It's a great pleasure to work with two different teams in the past three years. They are loving, devoted and always ready to help each other. I feel lucky that I get to work with these lovely people.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

I would love it if there was a superpower to shorten the distances travelled. I would love to have that power so I can go visit my family in China whenever I want.
