Jessica Fenyves (Stallings Elementary)
What do you teach and why did you become a teacher?
I am proud to be a School Counselor. I began my career as a fifth grade teacher. I worked hard to support my students academically, but I often found when students had more support for their social and emotional needs, they were then able to achieve more academic success. I want to make sure that every child feels seen, heard and supported.
How do you show your school spirit?
I love showing school support by advocating for school events and activities. We all love to wear our Stallings Stallions spirit wear!
What or who inspires you?
I am inspired every day by our students – to see them try their best, overcome challenges, help others and become skilled collaborators.
In which other teacher’s class would you like to enroll for a day? Why?
If I could enroll in any teacher’s class for a day, it would be one of my high school teachers, Mrs. Streiff. I took a college-level Shakespeare course in 12th grade and she helped me fall in love with reading and analyzing literature. She had high expectations and always wanted her students to be engaged and part of the learning process. She wanted to know our thoughts, interpretations and connections.
What is one of your hidden talents?
I’m not sure if it is a hidden talent, but I know many healthy coping strategies for handling big feelings and challenges, and I love helping people learn which strategies work for them.
If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?
You matter! There is only one of you and you bring unique talents and gifts to this world.
What is a professional motto or quote that you “work” by?
“Every child deserves a champion” by Rita Pierson. She explains that “Every child deserves a champion” – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.
This is something I try to remember every day as a school counselor, as I work to listen to students, support them, advocate for them and help them be the best that they can be.
What do you enjoy most about working in Union County Public Schools?
My favorite part about working in UCPS is the wonderful people I get to work with every day. At Stallings Elementary, these are the students, staff, administrators and families. Across the district, I am grateful to work and collaborate with counselors, lead counselors and a director of student support.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
If I had a superpower, I would clone myself so that I would be able to devote even more time to each student every day.
