Kayla Henry (East Union Middle)

What do you teach and why did you become a teacher?

I teach eighth grade science at East Union Middle School. I became a teacher because I love working with students. I previously worked at zoos and aquariums as an environmental educator, but I did not get to have a connection with the people I was teaching because the classes were so short. I wanted to be able to get to know the students and have a deeper connection so I could share my passion and hopefully see that passion ignite in their lives as well!

How do you show your school spirit?

You can find me at a variety of sporting events! I love cheering on my Eagles at football, basketball and soccer games. I also rep the blue and gold whenever I can!

What or who inspires you?

My parents are a huge inspiration for me. They worked hard every day to provide and set an example for me. They love what they do and they encouraged me to go do what I love as well. I look to them when I need to be reminded why I do what I do, and I am so thankful for their guidance in my life.

In which other teacher’s class would you like to enroll for a day? Why?

I would enroll in Mr. McMurray’s class for the day if I could. Mr. Maq’s room is so inviting and his personality makes learning fun! He makes the material relevant and interesting and he has a way of relating to students in a special way that makes every student feel important.

What is one of your hidden talents?

My students know I can’t draw, but they may not know I can sing! I sang my first solo when I was four years old in a church play and I sang in choirs all throughout school and into college. These days I do not sing much unless I am in the car or singing children’s songs with my daughter, but I still enjoy it.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

I would tell students to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to them in school now. If there is a club, join it. If there is a field trip, go on it. If there is a program of study that interests you, make sure you take advantage of that opportunity. The world is your oyster. You will not regret doing all of the things that interest you while you are young and have time. It can also help you make friends and find things that interest you in life.

What is a professional motto or quote that you “work” by?

“Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.” –Lady Bird Johnson

What do you enjoy most about working in Union County Public Schools?

I love working for the school system in which I grew up. It is so special to be able to work in a place that feels like home. The teachers here have always been incredible and I love being one of them!

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

If I could have any superpower, I would want to talk to animals. I think it would be fascinating to hear what wild animals have to say, but also to be able to know what my dog is thinking all the time.
