Stephanie Farlowe (Rocky River Elementary)

What do you teach and why did you become a teacher?

I'm a second grade teacher at Rocky River Elementary. I teach it all: social studies, science, math, reading, writing, phonics, and leadership!

I became a teacher because I wanted to help kids fall in love with learning.

What is your favorite memory from your teaching career?

My favorite memory was my first Leadership Day. Being able to watch all the kindergarten through fifth grade kids truly lead was so wonderful. Every day I work to empower students, and that Leadership Day (and many more) have solidified this purpose.

Outside of teaching, what are your hobbies or interests?

I love to read, knit, and travel.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Mind control. I would like to be able to erase the bad memories, the neglect, the traumas—all of it. In the meantime, I'll work to help all students heal and persevere.

If you could teach any subject outside your current field, what would it be and why?

High school math. I am a math nerd. Helping struggling mathematicians make sense of it would be very fulfilling.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to aspiring teachers?

Aspiring teachers should get into as many classrooms as they can before committing to an education degree. This will give more insight and more experience into what teaching is and isn't.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share

Dream big! You have one life. Become the best you!

What do you enjoy most about working in UCPS?

I love knowing what I do impacts my community.

Describe your most creative lesson plan. How did you make the topic fun for students?

I try to make all my lesson plans fun. I include a lot of movement, music, creativity, hands-on activities, games, and experiments. I am willing to be silly and vulnerable. I feel this gives my students permission to do the same.
