Destayech Rivers (Parkwood High)
What are your most and least favorite subjects and why?
My favorite subject is history because it feels like you're always learning a new story. It’s helpful because you can learn from the past and avoid making the same mistakes. I enjoy studying World Wars and the Civil War to understand our history and see how it has shaped the world we live in today.
My least favorite subject would probably be English because I don’t like the grammar part of it all. I do love to write and read, though. Overall, I like all of my classes.
If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?
I would want to travel to Ireland. I have a friend who lives in Ireland. She always sends me beautiful pictures of the waterfalls and the greenery. She goes hiking in the mountains, too. I love the outdoors. I’ve always wanted to go because of how pretty it looks.
She was an exchange student here for a year and we became friends. I’d love to visit her sometime.
What careers interest you?
I plan to join the Marines as a military police officer for six years. One of the reasons is that I want to see the world while having a good job. Another reason is that I want to help people and being a first responder is a way that I can do that. I intend to obtain a law degree and eventually become an attorney. That’s another way for me to help people.
What clubs or activities do you participate in? And why?
I am a part of FCA (Fellowship Christian Athletes) because I play sports and it’s a good group that helps you stay motivated. We meet once a week. I am part of JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corp), which is more of a class and another reason I like the military. Outside of school, I work and teach kids at a soccer club.
I play soccer, basketball and volleyball. I’ve tried track, too.
Additionally, I am part of a youth bible study outside of school that keeps me grounded.
If you had to choose between spaghetti or pizza, which would you choose?
I would choose pizza because I don’t like spaghetti. I’m not a noodle kind of person. Hawaiian pizza is my favorite.
What three words best describe you?
- Outgoing
- Adventurous
- Kind/thoughtful
What is your happiest school memory?
I have two memories from JROTC from this year. One was getting accepted into a program to earn my private pilot's license. The other is when someone from the military inspected the school and I was selected as one of the top two best performers.
What advice would you give your parents or teachers?
Sometimes students seem disrespectful or uncaring, but it's just a phase or facade to act tough. Deep down they care and appreciate their teachers and parents, even if they don’t say it enough. Be patient with them.
