Sardis Elementary first graders found a way to learn all about number order recently by forming a human number line. This might not seem so unusual, but the teachers decided to approach this activity in a new way by taking the entire first grade outside and lining them up across the bus parking lot.
Seventy-nine students were given number cards and prompted to find their places in the number line. Movement, visualization and oral participation reinforced the number concepts and helped students make connections. “It was a great hands-on experiment for them to do,” said Sarah Pinciak, first-grade teacher at Sardis. She also made the comment that it is important for the school’s first grade teachers to reach out to teach all kinds of learners. First grade teachers at Sardis continue to look for new ways to teach things so that every child can learn.
