Union County voters approve school bonds
The results are in. Union County voters approved a $39M bond referendum to address aging facilities at Parkwood High and East Union Middle. The bond passed with 55 (55.31) percent of voters approving the referendum. This data reflects 54 out of 54 precincts reported, according to the Union County Board of Elections website.
This bond will invest in pre-construction for a new Parkwood High and a construction project that will relocate East Union Middle to the Forest Hills High campus. For Parkwood High, the funding will address design work, assessments and land surveys. For the East Union Middle project, the funding will provide demolition, additions and building renovations to accommodate middle school academic and athletic programming.
“We needed this bond and I want to thank Union County residents for approving this project,” said Superintendent Dr. Andrew Houlihan. “The funding from this bond will allow us to begin a design for a new Parkwood High and move East Union Middle to a more modern and spacious facility. For more than 20 years, Union County voters have supported school bonds and this shows that our community value public schools, a quality education and safe facilities. When we have a successful bond, more projects can move up on the list to address capital needs.”
The design work for Parkwood High is contingent on when funds are provided by Union County Government. Typically, this occurs five to seven months after election day. Renovation and construction for the relocation of East Union Middle to the Forest Hills High campus will begin when Forest Hills High has relocated to its new building. We expect this process to begin in the fall of 2025.
