Over the last two weeks, the third graders have been building stamina by logging minutes for the county initiative Books and Brackets. This challenge includes all 30 schools in the county and is similar to March Madness. District leaders announced Friday, March 10th that Sun Valley Elementary School was one of the winning Sweet 16 schools that was leading the literacy challenge.

In order to encourage the students to read, the third grade teachers created a “Minute Meter’ with incentives that the students could earn as they log more minutes over the course of the competition.  So far the students, have earned 3 incentives including read outside, read with a friend, and pajama day.

Students enjoy reading outside with a friend as one of the grade level incentives as shown in the photo.  After reading the first two weeks of the competition, the students were able to log many hours worth of reading!!!  Way to go third graders and keep reading!

The Elite Eight schools will be announced on March 17, and the Final Four will be named March 24. The winning school will be unveiled during a celebration at Wingate University on March 31.
