Beta Club Processes Donated Food at Second Harvest Food Bank

The Sun Valley High School Beta Club processed food for hundreds of needy families in our area at the Second Harvest Food Bank in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, January 25th.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina serves a total of 19 counties: 14 counties in North Carolina including Anson, Burke, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rowan, Rutherford, Stanly, and Union. They serve 5 counties in South Carolina, including Cherokee, Lancaster, Spartanburg, Union, and York. SHFBM provides a regional distribution warehouse and branches that supply food and grocery items to charitable agencies that assist people in need. It provides training, technical assistance, and hunger education to its partner agencies. Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina strives through education, advocacy, and partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food. 

The mission of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina is to feed hungry people by soliciting and distributing food and household items through partner agencies. Second Harvest works to educate people in the community about the nature of and solutions to the problem of hunger. Second Harvest supplies food throughout a 19 county region of North and South Carolina through a network of over 700 emergency pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and programs for low-income children and seniors.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina was founded in 1981, as a project of the Charlotte Area Fund.  The organization became autonomous in January 1983 and was originally incorporated as Metrolina Food Bank.  Within 15 months, the Food Bank was able to qualify for membership in Feeding America, the national food bank network.  Feeding America is recognized as the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, comprised of more than 200 food banks and food rescue programs across the United States. 

In the past decade, Second Harvest has experienced tremendous growth.  Four locations are operational helping to provide more convenient access for partner agencies to acquire food.
