While the average child may be thrilled with the end of the school year approaching, the anticipation of summer break isn’t quite as thrilling for parents. Here are some tips to help your child stay on track and make the break more enjoyable for everyone.
Maintain a Structured Environment- Kids do better with structure and a routine. Maintain a schedule with consistent wake times, meal times, and bedtime. Try to keep it as close to the school year schedule as possible.
Set Clear, Consistent Behavior Expectations- Children and teens may act like they want to be in charge, but the truth is they feel safer knowing exactly what you expect of them. Consistency is one of the more important keys to addressing or avoiding behavior problems. Make sure you are communicating your expectations clearly and enforcing them consistently with effective consequences. While enforcing the rules every day can be tough, resisting the urge to give in can make life easier in the long run.
Keep Up the Learning- Continue to work on academics, take educational outings, and READ, READ, READ! This will help your child maintain the skills they have already required but it will also make the transition back to school easier in the fall.
Get Outdoors- No child should spend hours in front of a screen. Try to spend time outside every day, weather permitting, or enroll your child in a camp if possible. Outdoor play will help your child develop their physical skills and get healthy exercise. It is also a great place to explore and burn off excess energy.
Have Fun- Try to set aside each day to do a fun activity with your child. This can be part of the family schedule and included in their daily routine. Summer break is a great time to spend some extra time together as a family to strengthen relationships and make memories.
